Nebraska AG authorizes prescriptions of Ivermectin and HCQ as off-label drugs to fight COVID

The Nebraska attorney general has said he will not discipline or prosecute doctors who prescribe controversial and off-label drugs to treat and prevent COVID-19 infections if they have the patient’s consent.

KETV reported that Attorney General Doug Peterson released his 48-page opinion on Friday after receiving a question from Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services CEO Dannette Smith. She asked if doctors could be disciplined or prosecuted under the Nebraska Uniform Credential Act (UCA) if they prescribe drugs like ivermectin and hydroxychloroquine to fight COVID -19 in their patients.

“After receiving your question and conducting our investigation, we found significant controversy and suspicious information about a potential treatment for COVID-19,” Peterson wrote. He has also cited numerous medical journal articles and case studies.

“We emphasize… our office does not recommend any specific treatment for COVID-19. It is not our role,” continued the attorney general.

“Instead, we only address the off-label early treatment options discussed in this review and conclude that the available evidence suggests they may work for some people,” Peterson wrote. “Enabling physicians to consider these early treatments will allow them to assess additional tools that could save lives, prevent patients from going to hospital and take the strain off our already strained healthcare system. “

The FDA has warned against using hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) to treat COVID. Former President Trump took HCQ at the start of the pandemic to prevent COVID-19 infection and then stopped using it in May 2020.

Other famous people have said that the drug works for them. Actor Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson have said HCQ is helpful in their recovery from the coronavirus. Actor Daniel Dae Kim (Lost & Hawaii Five-0) claimed the HCQ was “the secret weapon” that helped him recover from the disease.

Last year, Pastor AR Bernard of the Christian Cultural Center in Brooklyn, NY, spoke about his heartbreaking battle with COVID-19 and how the drug cocktail with hydroxychloroquine and the antibiotic azithromycin saved his life. .

Families sue hospitals, seek alternative COVID treatments for loved ones

At least two dozen lawsuits have been filed in the United States, many in recent weeks, by people seeking to force hospitals to give loved ones with COVID ivermectin, a parasite drug that has been promoted as treatment despite a lack of conclusive evidence that it helps people with the virus.

Interest in the drug started to increase towards the end of last year and the beginning of it, when studies – some later withdrawn in other countries – seemed to suggest that ivermectin had a certain potential in the fight against COVID-19.

But some medical experts suggest that court intervention is not the way to practice medicine.

“The way medicine works is the experts, the doctors and … the hospitals,” Arthur Caplan, professor of bioethics at the Grossman School of Medicine at New York University, told The Associated Press. “When you go there, you are not going to a restaurant. You are not ordering your own care.

“You cannot have a medical field that is subject to duty to practice according to patient demand supported by court orders. It’s an absolutely horrible drug, ”Caplan said.

Ralph Lorigo does not see it that way. The Buffalo, New York attorney filed his first of several ivermectin lawsuits in January after being approached by the family of an 80-year-old woman who was in hospital on a ventilator. Her second case occurred later in the month, for a 65-year-old woman in hospital.

In both cases, judges ordered hospitals to allow women to take ivermectin as their families wanted. The two women survived their hospitalizations, according to the AP.

Lorigo, who has taken on many cases since, is adamant that ivermectin works. Health experts and federal agencies say any evidence of its effectiveness against COVID-19 is slim and more research needs to be done. Studies are currently underway.

Israeli clinical trials show positive results with ivermectin

As CBN News reported earlier this month, the Israeli government has asked a leading Israeli doctor to seek treatment for COVID. His studies have shown positive results with ivermectin in clinical trials.

Dr. Eli Schwartz, MD is the founder of the Center for Travel Medicine and Tropical Diseases at Sheba Medical Center in Israel. It is considered to be one of the best hospitals in the world. Dr Schwartz is also a professor at the Sackler Faculty of Medicine at Tel Aviv University.

For decades, Schwartz has traveled the world fighting epidemics like dengue and Ebola. At the start of the pandemic and months before a vaccine became available, Israel’s Defense Ministry tasked Schwartz with finding a medical solution for COVID-19.

“Since ivermectin is one of the drugs that we use in everyday life at the Tropical Institute, I knew that. I know its safety profile. And since there was some clue from in vitro studies , which show effectiveness against specifically, even against COVID-19, we decided to go for it, ”he said.

This meant submitting the drug to a clinical trial that lasted for 10 months.

“Our study, which was done here, is a randomized, double-blind, controlled trial. It’s really, I would say, it’s the best method that you do studies. And our conclusion is that it really does have some results. antiviral activities, ”Schwartz said. told CBN News.

From his international experience in the field, Schwartz was familiar with the parasites targeted by ivermectin. Since its development in 1987, nearly 4 billion doses with few side effects and at low cost have protected millions of people from insidious parasitic diseases like river blindness and elephantiasis.

This success earned its developers the 2015 Nobel Prize for Medicine. Schwartz’s study made headlines in Israel when his trial showed ivermectin to be antiviral as well.

“It is the first drug to show antiviral activity,” explained the doctor. “And then, I think, there is a good reason to pursue a much more thorough investigation to see, for example, if high risk people cannot deteriorate to be hospitalized, to be mechanically ventilated or to die.”

Schwartz’s clinical study found that by day 4, 86% of his patients who took ivermectin recovered. By the sixth day, 94% have recovered.

“Ultimately, ivermectin lowered the viral load faster and also sterilized the culture much better compared to placebo,” he noted.

Schwartz explained to CBN News that this means the ivermectin killed the virus and his patients have become non-infectious. He said the development could save lives and reduce quarantines by days.

“It’s a huge change in life. It’s a huge change for the patient. It’s a huge change for their family. And economically, it’s a huge change. You know, it’s a huge change for their family. is how much money you can save for the country’s economy if you can shorten the isolation time, ”he said.

Use not accepted by global health professionals

But ivermectin is not accepted by the global health establishment. A major concern for the FDA is that a number of people have tried to self-medicate using some form of medicine intended for livestock.

“Don’t do it. There is no evidence that it works and it could potentially have toxicity … said Dr Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

The World Health Organization advises “that ivermectin be used only to treat COVID-19 in clinical trials.”

The National Institutes of Health said, “Ivermectin is not approved by the FDA for the treatment of any viral infections” and that “well-conducted clinical trials are needed to provide more specific and evidence-based guidance on the role of ivermectin in treatment. of COVID-19. “

For studies to be accepted by the wider medical community, they must be peer reviewed and published in a medical journal. It was there that Professor Schwartz ran into a roadblock.

Several journals have refused it, but one is reviewing its study.

Schwartz added that while many health agencies want better studies, no large-scale ivermectin trials took place until the University of Oxford began one in June this year.

“I mean, it’s taken them 18 months from the start of the pandemic to try to do that. I mean people are dying all over the world. And you have drugs on hand and you have to wait so long. before getting conduction from a good study, ”he said.

“We are in the arms of Pharma, and Pharma is looking for new drugs”

Now pharmaceutical company Merck, which developed ivermectin, and Pfizer are in a race to produce an oral antiviral drug for COVID that some believe is what ivermectin might already do.

“In my opinion, the whole story of ivermectin goes way beyond ivermectin. It’s even beyond the crown. The problem is that we are in the arms of pharma and pharma research of new drugs. And, therefore, all the old drugs that maybe with good potential to use it for whatever you are looking for, there is no parents to push for that, “said Schwartz.

Professor Schwartz advocates the use of ivermectin but also believes in the vaccine.

“Most of the world the vaccine is still not available. So if we have a drug that can try to reduce the scale of the pandemic in the meantime, it’s absolutely necessary, but when, if I have to compare the vaccine and ivermectin for prevention, probably the vaccine. This is the solution, the international solution, “he said.

Schwartz hopes more research will prove that the drug can help fight the pandemic and that it will eventually be cleared for treating patients on a large scale and not just in clinical trials.
